As a devoted ocean conservationist, Alexandra channels her passion through science, storytelling, and advocacy. She has experience working with Universities and NGOs at the interface of the Sustainable Blue Economy, Marine Protected Areas, the ocean-climate nexus, and sustainable fisheries. Alexandra bridges the gap between science, education and policy and her work is a testament to her unwavering commitment to protecting our planet and inspiring others to do the same.

    Alexandra Azevedo is an avid explorer and wildlife photographer, having traveled to 35 countries and all seven continents. With a deep passion for exploring unique habitats and diverse cultures, she uses her photography as a powerful storytelling tool to capture the essence of place and space. Alexandra’s work reflects her commitment to connecting people with the natural world, highlighting the beauty and complexity of ecosystems around the globe. While her journeys have taken her far and wide, her favorite subject to photograph remains close to her heart, her home in South Africa, where she captures the stunning landscapes and vibrant wildlife that inspire her every day.

    Alexandra Azevedo is an Earth and Marine Scientist with extensive experience studying some of the world’s most unique and remote habitats. Her research has taken her to Antarctica, where she spent four months studying the ocean/climate nexus. To the Azores archipelago where she studied island biogeography, focusing on introduced and endemic species. Additionally, she conducted groundbreaking research on deep-sea skates in southern Africa. Alexandra’s diverse scientific background equips her with a deep understanding of the interconnectedness of Earth’s ecosystems and drives her passion for conservation and sustainable solutions.

    With a unique perspective rooted in the global south, Alexandra has provided critical insights at influential global conferences like the UN Ocean Conference, COP27, and the Our Ocean Conference. She has extensive experience in stakeholder engagement, working alongside governments, NGOs, the fishing industry, small-scale fishers, and research institutions to push forward sustainable fisheries and ocean conservation strategies on both regional and global levels. She has met with the Deputy Administrators from USAID, the State Department, and NOAA to advocate for greater protection of sharks and rays and to discuss implementing marine science education into the US school system.
